ISAAA AFRICENTER AND ACTESA SIGN MOU TO IMPLEMENT COMESA BIOTECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

ISAAA AfriCenter has signed a memorandum of understanding with ACTESA towards implementation of the COMESA Biotechnology Implementation Plan (COMBIP).

The MoU will help in curbing misinformation that often delays policy implementation and complicates the regulatory processes. The collaboration will involve regular updates and building capacity of media so they can objectively and accurately communicate biotechnology and biosafety.

The COMESA region continues to make great strides towards adoption of new breeding innovations. 5 out of 9 African countries that have granted biotech crops’ cultivation approval are in COMESA. The countries are Ethiopia, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi and Sudan.

ISAAA AfriCenter was established in 1994 with the goal to enhance food security and reduce poverty in sub-Saharan Africa through biotechnological interventions.

ACTESA is a specialized Agency of COMESA that aims at boosting intra-regional agricultural trade through support of small-scale farmers access to agricultural input.
