TEACHERS TO RECEIVE A PAY RISE
Teachers unions and their employer Teachers Service Commission TSC have reached a deal that will see teachers in Kenya receive a pay increase of between 7% and 10%. In a deal brokered Monday, it was agreed that the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement be amended and implemented in two phases in the next two years.
In the amended deal, entry-level graduate teachers will receive an additional 4,164 shillings, while those at former municipalities will get 5,141 shillings. Tutors in rural areas and small towns will receive an increment of between 2,100 shillings to 8,700 shillings as house allowance. 50,000 teachers will also be promoted as part of the deal.
The teachers’ unions led by the Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, Secretary General, Collins Oyuu have also vowed to ensure their employer honors the remaining 50% payment to cushion teachers from the high cost of living.
